Brisbane and Byron Bay:
a blend of urban energy and laid-back living
As the vibrant capital of Queensland, Brisbane charms with its perfect blend of modernity and nature. Winding through the city is the Brisbane River, with its towering skyscrapers, art galleries, local markets, and expansive botanical gardens harmonizing with each other. It’s a city where culture is lived outdoors, from the trendy South Bank district to Fortitude Valley, a hub for the arts. But Brisbane is also a gateway to the natural treasures of southern Queensland.
Just a short drive away, we discover Macleay Island and North Stradbroke Island, hidden gems of Moreton Bay, known for their pristine beaches, abundant wildlife, and breathtaking coastal trails.
Further south, Byron Bay, a coastal town with a bohemian charm, attracts surfers, yogis, and travelers seeking spirituality and nature. Surrounded by wild beaches and lush hills, the region invites relaxation and adventure alike. Byron Bay perfectly captures the Australian way of life, combining freedom, environmental respect, and openness to others. Brisbane and Byron Bay make for a captivating duo, balancing urban excitement with coastal rejuvenation.
A joyful family escape
in Brisbane,Byron Bay and the Gold Coast
For Easter 2023, we left Port Moresby and reunited briefly with our friends from Malawi in Brisbane. It was a quick but heartwarming catch-up before we ventured further south.
Brisbane immediately won us over with its vibrant energy, and after a few days in the city, we headed to Macleay Island for a much-needed retreat. Our cozy house on stilts offered spectacular views of the bay, and the days there were filled with peaceful walks, relaxing swims, and stunning sunsets.
North Stradbroke Island was a highlight, with its stunning cliffs, peaceful beaches, and wildlife sightings. We hiked through lush forests, discovering hidden coves, and were lucky enough to spot dolphins playing in the surf.
In April 2025, we returned to the area, this time to Byron Bay. The town’s laid-back vibe, combined with its beautiful beaches and serene atmosphere, made it the perfect place to unwind.
We enjoyed family time, explored the local markets, and embraced the relaxed, nature-filled spirit of the place. Every moment spent in this stunning region left lasting memories.
North Stradbroke
Island
During our trip along Australia’s east coast, we made a magical stop at North Stradbroke Island, known as Minjerribah by its Traditional Owners, the Quandamooka people. Just a short ferry ride from Brisbane, this sandy paradise felt like another world—wild beaches, crystal-clear lakes, and kangaroos lounging near the cliffs.
We walked the North Gorge trail at sunset and spotted whales in the distance—it was one of those peaceful, grounding moments that makes you slow down and just take it all in.
Byron Bay
In April 2025, we reached Byron Bay, and I finally understood the hype. There’s a special energy here—maybe it’s the mix of surfers, artists, and free spirits, or just the golden light over the ocean.
We hiked along the peninsula leading to the Cape Byron Lighthouse, all the way to the easternmost point of mainland Australia—it felt like standing at the edge of the world.
We also made the most of the long stretches of white sandy beaches, either gliding above them in a hang-glider or riding along the shore on bikes.
One of our highlights was exploring Nightcap National Park, where we followed Boogy Creek through the rainforest and stood in awe before the impressive Minyon Falls—a peaceful, lush escape just a short drive inland.
