A Hidden Gem of Papua New Guinea

Map of the northern part of Papua New Guinea and surrounding islands, including Port Moresby, and detailed locations along the coast and islands.

Milne Bay Province, located at the easternmost tip of mainland Papua New Guinea, is a tropical haven known for its breathtaking marine biodiversity, rich cultural heritage, and warm hospitality.

Stretching from the mainland into a constellation of over 600 islands, this province offers a dreamlike landscape of turquoise waters, coral reefs, volcanic peaks, and lush forests. Its capital, Alotau, serves as a gentle introduction to the region's peaceful rhythm of life, steeped in history from WWII and traditional coastal culture.

Milne Bay is a diver’s paradise, with some of the most pristine reefs in the world, but it’s also a land of discovery for nature lovers, birdwatchers, and cultural explorers. Life here unfolds in harmony with the ocean and land, shaped by centuries-old customs and a deep respect for the environment. Villages are vibrant with song, dance, and storytelling — and visitors are welcomed with curiosity and genuine warmth.

Far from the bustle of the cities, Milne Bay offers a slower, more meaningful way to travel. Whether you come for the adventure, the sea, or the people, the province leaves a lasting impression on the soul.

Christmas by the Sea:

Our Family Holiday in Milne Bay

For Christmas 2021, we left behind the bustling city of Port Moresby in search of peace and discovery, and Milne Bay delivered both in the most magical way. After a scenic bus ride through lush palm plantations, we arrived at Tawali Resort, nestled between the forest and the sea. Our traditional bungalows, perched on stilts above the water, offered stunning views of the sparkling ocean and surrounding greenery.

For the next few days, we embraced the tranquility of the region — snorkeling among vibrant coral reefs, exploring coastal villages, and enjoying the rich wildlife of the area. The relaxed atmosphere allowed us to take a step back and appreciate the simplicity of being together. The festive season was marked by intimate celebrations, including a Christmas gathering and a lively New Year’s Eve performance by local children.

Milne Bay didn’t overwhelm us with crowds or busy schedules. Instead, it provided the ideal environment for relaxation and cultural immersion, with the opportunity to savor local cuisine and connect with fellow travelers. This was a trip that exceeded our expectations in every way. However, there were even more adventures and discoveries waiting to be explored during our stay.

Each day in Milne Bay brought a new discovery. One day we explored isolated coves, the next we were served lunch on a palm-fringed white sand beach, and the day after, I climbed a mountain at dawn to listen to and try to spot paradise birds.

We also immersed ourselves in the local culture by visiting neighboring villages and the fascinating bone caves, attending traditional dances, especially during the New Year celebrations, discovering local crafts, and savoring delicious Papua New Guinean cuisine served during nightly buffets at our hotel. Christmas festivities were particularly memorable, with a mass and feast shared with a group from the Philippines and the local bishop, also Filipino, in a joyful and colorful atmosphere.

We will always remember Nozaki, the friendly dive instructor and member of the management team, who enjoyed playing with our children whenever she had the chance. We will also never forget the friendships we formed at the resort, which have lasted to this day, especially with a family from Malawi, who became close friends, and Beauty, the South African girl we often meet in Port Moresby.

These first holidays in Papua New Guinea far exceeded our expectations. We experienced unforgettable family moments, and it’s clear we highly recommend this place.

Milne Bay is truly a magical destination, especially for those who appreciate the vastness of the ocean and cultural exchanges.

Picnic and snorkeling

on a very secluded island

After a long boat journey, the island of Boiboiwaga finally comes into view—a hidden gem in the middle of the ocean. Its dazzling white sand beaches welcome us with open arms, strikingly set against the deep blue sea that surrounds it. In the distance, the majestic outline of Papua New Guinea’s eastern tip rises on the horizon, adding a touch of grandeur to an already magical scene.

Waiting for us on the beach is a delicious buffet, showcasing local and exotic flavors—a true feast, toes in the sand. Once satisfied, we dive into the crystal-clear waters for a refreshing swim and some snorkeling. Just a few strokes from the shore, we discover vibrant coral gardens teeming with tropical fish. An underwater world bursting with life and color.

Then, suddenly, the sky shifts. Dark clouds roll in, thick and fast. Within minutes, we’re caught in a torrential downpour that lasts a good half hour. Drenched but exhilarated, we laugh it off—had we left earlier with the Indian family traveling with us, we would’ve missed this unexpected twist.

That’s the thing about Boiboiwaga—it’s wild, raw, and full of surprises. A truly unforgettable day in a slice of untouched paradise, revealing not just its postcard beauty, but its unpredictable spirit too.

Moments of Connection

Along the Coast

Just a stone’s throw from the resort, numerous villages line the coastline. Guided by Joshua, we set off to meet the communities living there.

As we arrive, we’re greeted by bright-eyed children with beaming smiles—some of them even tag along with us for part of the way.

It’s a beautiful opportunity to glimpse their way of life, lived in deep harmony with nature. And for them, it’s a rare chance to connect with passing visitors and share a few moments of curiosity and laughter.

These genuine encounters added a rich, human layer to our journey—offering us a glimpse into the true essence of local life.

Chasing the Bird of Paradise at Dawn

At dawn, I set off in search of the Bird of Paradise, the iconic symbol of Papua New Guinea. With my guide by my side, we begin the arduous climb up a steep mountain trail.

Despite having arranged for a snack the night before, prepared by a staff member at the hotel, I quickly realize there’s nothing available in the dining room— the kitchen is closed. Hunger sets in, but it doesn’t stop me from continuing the journey. My desire to spot the elusive bird is stronger than ever.

Unfortunately, despite our efforts, the Bird of Paradise remains elusive. The disappointment is palpable, yet the experience itself is unforgettable.

This trek turned out to be much more than just a walk—it was a true physical challenge, pushing me to explore my own limits.

New Year's Eve at the Resort:

A Memorable Celebration

New Year’s Eve at the resort was truly special, filled with joy and unforgettable moments. The highlight of the evening was the stunning traditional dance performance from Milne Bay. The young dancers, dressed in colorful costumes, were simply outstanding.

After the performance, we had the chance to take photos with them. A lovely moment of cultural exchange.

We then enjoyed a variety of delicious local dishes during a buffet dinner, beautifully decorated for the occasion.

This evening will remain in our memories as a wonderful way to ring in the new year—filled with dance, mouth-watering local flavors, and energetic, hilarious children!
